Biomedical Science

Accurate analysis is a precondition of proper treatment!

Biomedical sciences analyse human beings and their living environments. The biomedical science graduating from Tartu Health Care College has obtained the necessary knowledge and skills to practice in contemporary laboratories investigating the condition of the human body as well as histological, biological and biochemical changes in the human body at tissue, cell and molecular levels. Graduate biomedical sciences are employed mainly in clinical laboratories and others conducting human and environmental investigations.

The functions of the biomedical sciences typically include the following: performing quality laboratory tests, preparing patients/clients for laboratory tests, assuring patient safety during the performance of laboratory tests, responsibility for environmental safety, organising interdepartmental cooperation on laboratory work, managing and developing the quality of laboratory work. The duration of study is 3.5 years (210 ECTS). The curriculum consists of thirteen basic modules:

  • professional and personal development
  • anatomy-physiology
  • chemistry and basics of laboratory work
  • working environment in the laboratory
  • study of diseases
  • microbiology
  • immunology
  • pathology
  • clinical chemistry
  • haematology
  • pharmacology and toxicology
  • cell biology, basics of molecular diagnostics and genetics
  • public health
